USE OF THE CATATHYMIC AND IMAGINATIVE METHOD
IN DEALING WITH INTERNAL CONFLICTS IN ADOLESCENCE

SUMMARY:

The article is aimed at substantiating the appropriateness of using the catathymic and imaginative method of dealing with inner conflicts of adolescents. The catathymic and imaginative method or guided affective imagery (or symboldrama) is based on the principles of depth psychology, which uses the special method of working with imagination for visualisation of person’s unconscious fantasies, desires, and conflicts. It involves free dreaming in the form of imaginations on the topic proposed by a psychologist. The study involved 9 students-adolescents (4 male and 5 female students). All the respondents had inner conflicts associated with their parents. The experiment was carried out in three stages. The first one was aimed at revealing the essence of the personal ideas about the inner conflicts by the students by means of Semantic differential method by C. Osgood. The second one involved the use of catathymic and imaginative method in order to deal with the respondents’ inner conflicts connected with their mothers. At the third stage, the method of C. Osgood was used again in order to assess the changes of the respondents’ respond to the inner conflicts. The research results have shown that the majority of the adolescents demonstrated low indices of the “assessment” factor for the most of the proposed stimuli at the first stage of the experiment. It is associated with the respondents’ poor ability to differentiate their emotional states. At the third stage after consideration of the inner conflicts by means of  guided affective imagery according to all stimuli, the indices of factors “assessment” have increased. Thus, the research results prove the expediency of the catathymic and imaginative method of dealing with inner conflicts of adolescents. The prospects of the further studies involve revealing the gender peculiarities of adolescents’ inner conflicts

PECULIARITIES OF ATO MEMBERS’ VIEWS ABOUT A MODERN UKRAINIAN

SUMMARY:

It is a fact that over a long period of time Ukraine has been in a state of constant tension, frustration and uncertainty. This situation leads to significant transformations that, in particular, convinces citizens to rethink their life values and roles in the social processes occurring in the country. ATO members are directly involved in the process of changes and transformations that are taking place in Ukraine. Therefore, the scientific interest is the problem of consciousn notions about the Ukrainians and their functioning as motivational factors in the military service. The article is aimed at investigating ethnic consciousness of ATO members. In terms of this, the method of directed association experiment (AE) was used. The participants of the experiment were asked to name 10 associations to the word-stimulus “Ukrainian”. The survey was conducted anonymously, the participants indicated only their age and nationality. The procedure of processing the results of the research involved the following stages:1) the investigation of associations identified by respondents; 2) quantitative analysis of the associations; 3) content analysis of the associations on the basis of which the 10 categories were singled out; 4) quantitative analysis of the indicated categories of associations; 5) qualitative analysis of the obtained data. As a result of the research, the prevailing substantive content of the ATO members about the notion of “Ukrainian” was found. 12 most frequently used words-associations have been singled out: family, patriot, Ukraine, honest, hardworking, good, flag, anthem, home, mother, a person who loves his motherland, family man. These results may indicate that in the consciousness of servicemen, a Ukrainian is a patriot, who is characterized by such personal qualities as honesty and friendliness. The greatest value of a Ukrainian, in ATO members’ opinion, is family, mother, home, and motherland.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AS A PERSONAL RESOURCE OF PROVIDING
PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING OF JUNIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS

SUMMARY:

The theoretical review of scientific approaches to disclosure of the essence of the concepts “emotional intelligence”, “psychological well-being” is performed in the article. The state of mental health and psychological well-being of elementary school students evokes particular attention. Modern education is primarily focused on the intellectual development of students. Unfortunately, teachers do not pay enough attention to their emotional states that occur during the educational process. The emotional intelligence is a socially significant integrated characteristics of an individual that provides the ability to understand his/her own emotions and emotional experiences of others and manage the emotional state. Scientific approaches to understanding the phenomenon of “psychological well-being” which is traditionally associated with mental health, emotional comfort, life satisfaction, a sense of human happiness have been reviewed. Among them, the most famous one is a model of psychological well-being developed by C. Riff. It has been proved that the high level of the development of emotional intelligence is a personal factor providing psychological well-being of an elementary school student. It has been determined that positive emotions, good well-being, positive self-esteem, expressed in satisfaction with one’s academic performance and personal qualities, positive attitude towards oneself, others and the world in general are brightly manifested in junior school students with high emotional intelligence. The junior school students, who have the low a level of emotional intelligence maturity, are characterised by negative emotions, bad mood, negative attitude to the people around them and themselves.

SIGNIFICANCE OF RELATIONSHIPS AND PSYCHOSOCIAL ADAPTATION DURING ADOLESCENCE

SUMMARY:

This study examines associations between different aspects of romantic involvement and psychosocial adaptation during adolescence. 901 students (432 boys, 469 girls) aged 12 to 17 years, who have been involved in at least one romantic relationship, answered questionnaires aimed at measuring ten parameters of romantic involvement (interest, age at the time of the first romance, average age of the partners, number of romantic relationships, number of broken hearts, average duration of relationship, duration of a recent, more significant relationship, time spent each week out of the school in this relationship, current romantic status, sexually active or not) and four indices of psychosocial adjustment (performance at school, body image, self-esteem, behavioural problems). The results demonstrate that it is possible to accurately predict poorer performance at school based on stronger romantic involvement, which is more significant for younger adolescents (ages 12 to 14) than for older ones (ages 15 to 17). Body image and self-esteem are positively and significantly related to greater involvement in romantic relationships, and boys differ from girls in terms of self-esteem parameters. Finally, behavioural problems are significantly associated with greater romantic involvement at all ages. The significance of correlation between variables ranges from weak to moderate, depending on age and gender (r ranging between 0.13 and 0.40) and the regression equations account for a generally modest portion of the total variance (6.3% to 11.7%). Differences attributable to age and gender refer to interaction effects concerning only few parameters. The results obtained are discussed in the context of psychosocial development in adolescence.

RELATIONS BETWEEN IDENTITY AND TEMPORAL ORIENTATION IN ADOLESCENCE

SUMMARY:

In Erikson’s view, formation of a relatively stable identity and conception of one’s own future is the specific developmental task in adolescence. Erikson’s theory and Marcia’s conception of the identity status give an interesting basis for construction of two models of development of this relation and its changes in lifetime.

KEYWORDS:

adolescence, identity, future orientation, temporal orientation, development of identity.
