THE ROLE OF CHARACTER ACCENTUATION IN THE FORMATION OF ADAPTIVE STRATEGIES FOR COPING WITH STRESSFUL SITUATIONS

SUMMARY:

The article is devoted to analyzing the role of character accentuations in the formation of adaptive coping strategies in stress situations. The relevance of this study is determined by the increasing levels of stress in modern society and the need to identify factors of successful psychological adaptation. The aim was to determine how different types of character accentuations influence the choice of stress coping strategies. To achieve this aim, a theoretical review was conducted and an empirical study with 43 adults (81 % women, aged 18–45) was carried out. The Leonhard–Schmieschek Character Accentuation Inventory, a Coping Behavior questionnaire, and Holmes–Rahe Life Events Scale were used. The results confirmed the hypothesis of a statistically significant relationship between accentuation types and the preference for specific coping strategies. In particular, the hyperthymic accentuation type correlates with frequent use of problem-focused (adaptive) coping, whereas anxious, cyclothymic and other emotionally unstable accentuations are associated with a predominance of emotion-focused and avoidant strategies. It was also found that a high level of life stress is characteristic for individuals with pronounced social engagement (hyperthymia) and emotional reactivity. The scientific novelty of this work lies in combining domestic and international approaches to the problem and empirically testing the influence of character accentuations on coping in an adult sample. The practical significance is reflected in formulated recommendations for increasing stress resilience: based on the findings, a psycho-correctional program was developed to improve adaptive strategies for individuals with various accentuation types. The results can be applied in practical psychology, in particular to individualize stress prevention and intervention programs.
