PSYCHOLOGICAL BASES OF TEACHING FUTURE PSYCHOLOGISTS TO FORM POSITIVE PHYSICAL SELF-IMAGE IN ADOLESCENTS

SUMMARY:

The paper aims to reveal psychological bases of teaching psychologists to form positive physical self-image in adolescents. The following empirical methods were used in the study: method Self-Attitude to Physical Self-Image Inventory by A. Cherkashena; Index of Life Inventory by R. Plutchik and Ch. Kellerman. The degree of coherence of individual self-esteem rates of adolescents with the estimates of the significance of the studied characteristics of their physical self-image was determined using Pearson correlation coefficient. An important step in a professional approach is considering the components of adolescents’ physical self-image, namely its anatomical, functional and social characteristics. The ratio of the ideal self-concept and the ideal physical self-image, which is extremely significant for adolescents, is of particular importance. The closer physical self-image is to the ideal created by the individual, the more likely he/she will have positive self-concept in general. A future psychologist should pay special attention to the mechanisms of psychological defense of an adolescent, which protect his/her physical self-image in the case of conflicting attitudes in the personality itself or inconsistency of external information and his/her worldview or self-image. The components of developing work contributing to the overcoming of internal conflicts and self-identification of an adolescent’s personality have been distinguished: body-focused art therapy; elements of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology; elements of positive psychotherapy; humanistic psychology, etc.
