SENIOR STUDENTS’ PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY

SUMMARY:

The urgent task of university education is the development and formation of future professionals’ personality, their self-identification assistance with the profession, allowing students to create optimal conditions for self-realization in the profession. Professional identity is the result of professional self-determination, manifested in the comprehension of oneself as a representative of a certain kind of occupation. Students’ professional identity begins to develop when they face the necessity of choosing future profession. The maturity of professional identity is accompanied by the feeling of safety and self-belief. The study of students’ professional identity has been conducted in Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University. It involved fourth- and fifth-year students majoring in humanities and technical sciences. There have been used “The method of studying the professional identity statuses” by A. Azbel and L. Schneider and “The method of personality type determination” by J. Holland. The statistical analysis of the differences between students majoring in humanities and technical sciences in the identity status and personality types obtained by the above mentioned methods has been carried out using χ 2 -criteria in the package of statistical data processing SPSS. The research results have shown that students majoring in humanities are more prone to professional identity crisis; they have a high level of anxiety and are dependent in their occupational choice. There have been justified the differences in “pseudo-identity” between the two groups of students. It has been affirmed that the dominant type for the first group of surveyed is a social one, and more realistic type of personality describes another group of students. The students majoring in humanities realize the problem of occupational choice and are willing to solve it. The system of aims and values is undeveloped in humanities-minded students compared to technical-minded ones. Infraction of identification and social relations mechanism characterize students of technical field. They choose a profession according to the necessity to emphasize their social status and avoid the problem of choice (state of crisis), which has been confirmed by the high indices of “pseudo-identity”. The carried out empirical study has shown that in the both groups of surveyed the occupational choice is unconscious and dependant, which complicates the formation of their professional identity.
